Based on true, historical facts and events, Syberich Willems and Dyveke were indeed living their dramatic lives and the Huninga family is one of the oldest families recorded from 1440 onwards in the history of Groningen and its surroundings,
It has long been on my mind how people could knit professionally hundreds of years ago, particularly the silk stocking knitters with their 0.7 mm needles who were able to knit a pair of stockings in 3 weeks, including the damask motifs above the clock, knitting in rooms with very tiny windows, little daylight and by candle light?
It really kept me thinking for a long time and eventually led to the research work done for this book.
I discovered that I cannot imagine in the slightest what daily life was actually like in that 16th century, or the 17th for that matter. The clothes they wore can be seen in all the paintings and drawings of the amazing Dutch artists of that century.
But what was that everyday life really like? No matter how much I read about it and research it, it is still hard to imagine how they lived and worked on a daily basis back then.
When it comes to someone who knits professionally by hand for her clients, like our Aylcke, then as a designer knits myself I know all about it. This becomes clearer in the story itself as well.
After this whole story, I consider Syberich one of my knitting ancestors.

Gebaseerd op ware, historische feiten en gebeurtenissen, Syberich Willems en Dyveke leefden hun dramatische leven werkelijk en de familie Huninga is een van de oudste families die vanaf 1440 in de geschiedenis van Groningen en omstreken zijn vermeld.
Het heeft mij lang bezig gehouden hoe mensen honderden jaren geleden professioneel konden breien, met name de zijden kousenbreisters met hun 0,7 mm naalden die in staat waren om in 3 weken tijd een paar kousen te breien, inclusief de damast motieven boven de klok, breiend in kamers met heel kleine ramen, weinig daglicht en bij kaarslicht?
Het heeft me werkelijk lang aan het denken gezet en uiteindelijk geleid tot het onderzoekswerk dat voor dit boek is gedaan.
Ik ontdekte dat ik me niet in het geringste kan voorstellen hoe het dagelijkse leven in die 16e eeuw, of de 17e trouwens, er werkelijk aan toeging. De kleding die ze droegen is te zien op alle schilderijen en tekeningen van die geweldige Nederlandse kunstenaars uit die eeuw.
Maar hoe zag dat dagelijkse leven er werkelijk uit? Hoeveel ik er ook over lees en onderzoek, het blijft moeilijk om me voor te stellen hoe ze toen dagelijks leefden en werkten. Als het gaat om iemand die professioneel met de hand breit voor haar klanten, zoals onze Aylcke, dan weet ik daar als designer breisels alles van af. In dit verhaal wordt dat ook duidelijker.
Na dit hele verhaal beschouw ik Syberich Willems als een van mijn breiende voorouders.
